5 Tips To Get Your Pet Used To Paw Touching

As pet parents, we know how important it is to care for our furry friends' paws—whether it's for nail trimming, applying paw balm, or checking for injuries. However, some pets are extra sensitive and may resist having their paws touched. Training them to be comfortable with paw handling not only makes grooming easier but also ensures their safety and well-being.

Here are five effective tips to help your pet get used to paw touching:

  1. Slow and gradual - Slowly start putting your hands near their paws and on their paws whilst sleeping. You can also teach them to give you, their paw.
  2. Association - Always give treats and positive re-enforcement when your pet allows you to touch their paws. Use a calm voice and reward them.
  3. Relax and distract - Try touching their paws when they are in a calm state like bedtime. Offer a chew toy or lick mat as a distraction. Licking is calming for pets.
  4. Practice daily - Even if your dog gets comfortable with paw touching, it is great to continue daily and apply the Poppy and Vi Paw and Nose Balm topically to heal cracks and nourish them.
  5. Respect their limits and be patient - Try not to force your pet as this can create a negative association with paw touching. You can always try again later.
